OUR LEARNING

HOW WE LEARN - the Manaiakalani pedagogy

NBC is part of the Manaiakalani network of schools across Aotearoa New Zealand, specifically the Te Ara Tūhura cluster with 6 other schools.  Manaiakalani is an education programme achieving significant improvement in student achievement outcomes.  By offering students full digital citizenship, the Manakalani programme is not only achieving improved educational results, but also realising the potential for enhanced employment and life outcomes for our students.  By making their learning accessible online, our students are able to access their learning anywhere, anytime and at any pace.  We do this by supporting parents to buy a personal digital device (a chromebook) for each learner, and providing internet access at home and at school.  Our teachers are also continually supported in improving their pedagogical innovation.  Accelerated student achievement outcomes are evidenced by an extensive research base.

Thus, we have adopted the Learn-Create-Share pedagogy as a way of learning and teaching the New Zealand Curriculum.  Complimented by the effective use of digital technology, our students are empowered to learn, creating samples of work to demonstrate their new understanding and sharing and connecting their new learning with their peers, whānau and wider community through their Class Sites and personal blogs (Year 4-8 students).  To support the blended learning that we do at NBC, our Year 3 - 8 students are encouraged to purchase their own CHROMEBOOK.  Our younger students (Years 0-2) use class sets of iPads for learning.

CYBERSMART AGREEMENT

Part of being a digital citizen requires our students to understand and safely work on the internet.  Our staff introduce the Kawa of Care from the first day of school and begin teaching an intensive digital safety programme.  This includes teaching the students how to care for their digital devices, but extends to how to stay cyber smart and how to effectively comment on their peer's blogs.

CHROMEBOOK PURCHASE

Our students, Year 3 onwards, use a digital device for learning.  We encourage all students to have their own chromebook.  Chromebooks can be purchased through Uru Mānuka at a competitive price.  If you are interested in purchasing a chromebook through this special scheme, please click the link, complete the form and make a payment through internet banking.
